Yeah, what you see above actually is yet another iPod speaker / alarm clock mashup, but being that it's from Boynq, it looks noticeably better than most of the alternatives. The interestingly designed device does quite a few things aside from wake you from your slumber, as it also includes an FM radio and line in / out ports to compliment the built-in equalizer and 20-watts of amplification. Best of all, this thing plays nice with every dock-connecting iPod ever created (including the iPhone "on models produced after January 1st"), and the remote controllable snooze practically guarantees that you'll never be on time for anything again. Talk about user friendly..

Q4 of 2007 will see a Linux version released that enables PC games to be played on the PlayStation 3 and it does not stop there, as they also claim the games can be played on other devices like mobile phones, media devices, set top boxes and DVD players. This is going to be amazing.

Wii lead over PS3 narrow in latest Japan charts Sales for Nintendo Co.'s Wii video game console narrowed against Sony Corp.'s Playstation 3 in the latest Japan retail data.

Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that Wii sold 24,932 units between Oct. 15 and Oct. 21. By comparison, the PS3 sold 17,130 units in the same period.

The hardware ranked in No. 3 and No. 4 positions, respectively. Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 ranked below with far less movement at No. 6.

Last week, the action title Lair helped increase PS3 sales in Japan to 12,365 units.

Sony this month price cut the PS3 in Japan by 10 percent to spur sales in the territory. In addition, it will offer a 40GB PS3 SKU on Nov. 11.

While the Wii lead over PS3 has narrowed, the motion-sensitive hardware carried a 4-to-1 lead in sales between Apr. and Sept. according to game magazine publisher Enterbrain.

But Microsoft's cost of revenue for its gaming division increased 99%, or $584 million, in part because of a jump in warranty-related expenses.

What a difference a biologically enhanced super-soldier makes. Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) reported Thursday that sales of its Xbox 360 video game console jumped 100% in its fiscal first quarter, thanks to the debut of Halo 3.

Microsoft said it shipped 1.8 million Xbox 360 consoles in the quarter, compared to 900,000 in the same period a year ago. The numbers are a stark contrast to the fourth quarter, during which Xbox 360 shipments plunged 60%.

The difference, Microsoft said, is Halo 3 -- a sci-fi based first-person shooter game starring the plasma-ray packing Master Chief. The game, which can only be played on the Xbox 360, launched in September and rang up $330 million in sales during the first quarter.

The surge helped Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices division post a first-quarter profit of $165 million on revenue of $1.9 billion, compared to a loss of $142 million on sales of $1.01 billion in the same period a year ago.

Halo 3 has, to date, broken a number of gaming industry records, including the mark for first day sales. The title pulled in $170 million on its Sept. 25 launch date.

On the downside, Microsoft said that cost of revenue for its gaming division increased 99%, or $584 million, in part because of a jump in warranty-related expenses. The company in the fourth quarter took a $1.06 billion charge against earnings to cover the cost of extending the warranty period for the Xbox 360.

Microsoft conceded that the consoles suffer from frequent hardware failures and said it's working to fix the problem.

Overall, Microsoft said its first-quarter revenue increased 27% year-over-year to $13.76 billion. Net income climbed 23% to $4.3 billion, while earnings per share increased 29% to 45 cents.

A mod chipping company called Team Symbiote has apparently created an application for owners of its Wii mod chip that enables the console to play back DVDs. This may not be the first mod to enable DVD playback, but since Nintendo still hasn't got around to providing the console with playback capabilities, we thought it'd be worth bringing it up again. Nintendo, how about hurrying up and making it so normal people don't have to buy dodgy chips to play a DVD or two on their console?

This certainly isn't the first time we've heard this rumor, but SmartHouse is reporting that Microsoft and Toshiba are working on an updated Xbox 360 with a built-in HD DVD drive. If that were all, we wouldn't bat an eye -- it's gotta happen sometime -- but there are some other, crazier aspects to this version of the rumor that set off some red flags: SmartHouse also claims that the new box will be Toshiba-branded and have dual HDTV tuners, electronic program guide capabilities, built-in wireless networking, and sport an "MP3 player" dock, which we'd imagine would be for a Zune. That's a hell of a box, right there, and while we've seen similar devices like Sony's PSX, they didn't exactly take the world by storm. Our money is still on a simple bump of the existing 360 to HD DVD, but get ready to hear a lot of about this rumor in the weeks to come .
